St Johns Church was built in the 1860s in the neo-gothic style. Originally a 5m high monument to Peter the Great was erected by the Russian empire in 1910 in front of St Johns and the square was named for him. After the Estonian independence in 1922 the statue was melted and recycled and the square named as the Freedom Square.
